Save MoneyWith The Amazon Subscribe & Save Program

If you shop on Amazon regularly, you may have noticed a little option sitting underneath certain products: Subscribe & Save.

At first glance, it might not seem like a big deal. But if you regularly buy the same household, beauty, grocery, or personal-care products, this Amazon feature can be a surprisingly useful way to make repeat purchases a little easier—and potentially less expensive.

The best part? You don't have to remember to reorder everything yourself.

WHAT IS AMAZON SUBSCRIBE & SAVE?

Amazon Subscribe & Save allows you to schedule recurring deliveries of eligible products you purchase regularly.

Instead of placing a new order every time you run out of something, you select the Subscribe & Save option, choose a delivery frequency, and Amazon handles the recurring order.

Amazon says eligible Subscribe & Save products can offer discounts of up to 15%, although the actual discount depends on the product and the offer available when you subscribe.

And there's no need to subscribe to everything you buy. That's actually the key to using the program wisely.

WHY SUBSCRIBE TO SOMETHING YOU'RE GOING TO BUY ANYWAY?

Think about the products you constantly run out of.

  • Toilet paper.
  • Paper towels.
  • Shampoo.
  • Toothpaste.
  • Laundry detergent.
  • Pet supplies.
  • Coffee.
  • Skincare.
  • Cleaning products.
  • Baby supplies.

These aren't exactly impulse purchases. If you're going to buy them again anyway, having them automatically delivered can save you the hassle of remembering to reorder. And if the Subscribe & Save price is lower than the regular purchase price, you may save money too.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO RECEIVE SOMETHING EVERY MONTH

One thing I really like about Subscribe & Save is that you're not necessarily committing yourself to a monthly delivery forever.

Depending on the product, you can select a delivery schedule that works for your household.

Maybe you need something every month.

Maybe every two months makes more sense.

Maybe you only need it a few times a year.

The idea is to choose a frequency based on how quickly you actually use the product, not simply because Amazon suggests a recurring schedule.

HERE'S WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING: COUPONS

If you're looking for bigger savings, don't just look at the Subscribe & Save price. Check the product page for coupons too.

Some eligible products may offer a coupon that can be applied alongside an available Subscribe & Save discount, potentially making the first subscription order significantly cheaper.

This is one of the first things I'd check before buying.

My little Amazon routine would be:

Regular price → Subscribe & Save price → Available coupon → Final price

That's a much better way to judge whether you're actually getting a deal.

DON'T ASSUME THE BIGGEST DISCOUNT IS ALWAYS THE BEST DEAL

Here's an important money-saving rule:

A discount isn't a saving if you didn't need the item. It's easy to see a percentage-off offer and think, "I'm saving money!"

But if you buy three products you wouldn't normally purchase just to reach a particular discount threshold, you've probably spent more—not less.

Instead, start with the products you already know you need. Then look for ways to reduce the price.

MY FAVORITE STRATEGY: BUILD A REPLENISHMENT LIST

Rather than subscribing to random products, make a little list of the things you regularly use. For example:

BATHROOM: Toothpaste, Floss, Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Toilet Paper

KITCHEN: Coffee, Paper towels, Trash Bags, Dishwashing Products, Pantry staples

HOME: Laundry detergent, Cleaning supplies, Sponges, Batteries, Storage essentials

BEAUTY: Makeup remover, Cotton pads, Skincare basics, Hair-care products

PETS: Pet food, Treats, Cleaning supplies, Grooming products

Once you know what you already buy repeatedly, Subscribe & Save becomes much easier to use strategically.

Example: See How the Savings Add Up

Let’s say you regularly buy Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets, which cost $8.97 as a one-time purchase. If the item is eligible for a 5% Subscribe & Save discount, you would save approximately $0.45, bringing the estimated price down to $8.52. It may not seem like a huge difference on one purchase, but if it’s an item you regularly buy, those small savings can add up over time.

And the bigger benefit comes from using it on several essentials you already purchase regularly. Amazon says eligible subscriptions can receive savings of up to 15%, depending on the applicable discount tier and subscription details.

The key: Don't subscribe just because something is discounted. Subscribe when you're already going to buy it and the delivery schedule matches how quickly you use it.

Quick rule:

Need it regularly + good Subscribe & Save price = worth considering.

Don't need it + just subscribing for the discount = skip it.

YOU CAN SKIP OR CANCEL

Another reason Subscribe & Save can be convenient is that you're not necessarily stuck with the schedule you initially choose.

Amazon allows customers to manage their subscriptions, including changing delivery schedules, skipping deliveries, and cancelling subscriptions, subject to the order's shipping status and applicable terms.

So if you suddenly realize you still have two bottles of shampoo sitting in your bathroom cabinet, you don't necessarily need another one arriving next month. Skip it. And if you no longer want the product, cancel it.

CHECK YOUR PRICE BEFORE THE NEXT DELIVERY

This is probably the most important habit I'd recommend. Don't set up a subscription and forget about it.

Prices and promotions can change. Before an upcoming Subscribe & Save order ships, take a moment to check the current price and make sure you still want the product. You may discover:

  • The price has changed

  • There's a new coupon

  • The item is on sale

  • You don't need another shipment yet

  • Another product has become a better option

A 30-second price check can prevent an unnecessary purchase.

CAN YOU USE SUBSCRIBE & SAVE WITHOUT AMAZON PRIME?

Subscribe & Save is separate from Amazon Prime membership, so you don't need to treat Prime membership as a prerequisite for using the program. If you sign up for a Prime membership, shipping may be free, and you may also qualify for other discounts and limited-time deals before they become available to the public. If you aren’t a Prime member, you can join and get a 30 day free trial to see if the savings do add up.

PRODUCTS I WOULD LOOK FOR

If you're just getting started, I'd focus on products that have three things in common:

You use them regularly.

You know roughly how quickly you go through them.

You'd probably buy them again anyway.

That's where Subscribe & Save makes the most sense. Instead of trying to turn every Amazon purchase into a subscription, think of it as your automatic replenishment shelf.

A SIMPLE AMAZON SAVINGS CHECKLIST

Before clicking "Subscribe & Save," I would ask myself:

☐ Do I actually need this product?

☐ Would I normally purchase it again?

☐ Is the Subscribe & Save price lower than the regular price?

☐ Is there an available coupon?

☐ Is the delivery frequency realistic for me?

☐ Have I checked the final price?

☐ Will I remember to review the subscription before the next shipment?

If you can answer yes to the important questions, it may be worth subscribing.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Amazon Subscribe & Save isn't a magic money-saving button—and it shouldn't be treated like one. The real trick is knowing what to subscribe to and what to skip.

Use it for the boring essentials you're already going to buy. Look for eligible coupons. Pay attention to the final price. Choose a delivery schedule that matches your actual usage. And don't be afraid to skip or cancel a shipment when you don't need it.

That's when Subscribe & Save becomes genuinely useful: less remembering, fewer last-minute orders, and potentially lower prices on the things already on your shopping list.
