Amazon Prime: Is It Worth It for Your Everyday Shopping?

If you shop on Amazon regularly, you’ve probably seen the option to join Amazon Prime. But what do you actually get with a Prime membership—and does it make sense if you’re mainly using Amazon for everyday purchases?

Amazon describes Prime as a membership that combines shopping, savings, convenience and entertainment. In Canada, Prime members can get free Prime shipping on more than 20 million eligible items, including thousands of products with Same-Day or One-Day Delivery availability.

What Is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a paid membership designed to give frequent Amazon shoppers additional benefits. Instead of paying separately for certain eligible delivery services, members can access Prime shipping benefits on qualifying products. The membership also includes entertainment and other perks, so it isn't limited to shopping.

You can choose a monthly or yearly membership, depending on what works better for your shopping habits. The membership also includes entertainment and other perks, so Prime isn't limited to shopping and delivery.

Choose Your Prime Plan

Amazon offers different membership options, allowing you to choose a plan based on your shopping habits and eligibility.

  • Prime Annual — billed yearly
  • Prime Monthly — billed monthly
  • Prime for Students & 19–24-year-olds — a discounted option for eligible customers

Eligible customers may also be able to start with a 30-day free trial before deciding whether to continue. You can cancel your membership at any time.

Amazon Prime: More Than Just Free Shipping

If you shop on Amazon regularly, you’ve probably wondered whether Amazon Prime is actually worth paying for. At first, it can seem like the membership is mainly about getting packages delivered faster. But Prime has grown into much more than a shipping perk.

For Canadian shoppers, Prime combines shopping benefits with entertainment and other everyday perks.

So, What Do You Actually Get With Prime?

The biggest attraction for many shoppers is simple: convenient delivery.

Eligible Prime products can come with fast delivery options, although the exact delivery speed and eligibility depend on the product and location. Amazon also offers Same-Day delivery in select areas for eligible orders.

That can be especially useful when you're ordering things you need regularly instead of making a separate trip to the store. Think:

  • Household essentials
  • Personal-care products
  • Kitchen supplies
  • Pet supplies
  • Electronics and accessories
  • Last-minute everyday purchases

Instead of adding an item to your cart and then hesitating because of the shipping cost, Prime can make the checkout decision a little easier when the item qualifies for Prime delivery.

Prime Isn't Only About Shopping

This is the part people sometimes overlook.

A Prime membership also includes entertainment and digital benefits such as Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming and Amazon Photos, along with access to certain member savings and shopping events.

So if you already use some of these services, you're not looking at the membership purely from a shipping perspective.

For example, someone who regularly orders from Amazon and watches Prime Video may get more practical use from the membership than someone who only places an occasional Amazon order.

What About Prime Deals?

Prime can also give members access to special shopping events and promotions.

Events such as Prime Day feature deals specifically for Prime members, while other promotions can provide members with early or exclusive access to selected offers.

But here's my favourite reminder when it comes to any “deal”: A discount isn't a saving if you didn't need the item in the first place.

It's very easy to see a reduced price and convince yourself that you're saving money. Instead, start with your shopping list and then look for deals—not the other way around.

Prime vs. Subscribe & Save

If you're reading this alongside my Amazon Subscribe & Save guide, this distinction is important.

Prime and Subscribe & Save are two different things.

Prime is a membership that comes with shopping, delivery and entertainment benefits.

Subscribe & Save is designed around recurring deliveries of eligible products that you purchase regularly.

For example, you might use Subscribe & Save for laundry detergent, toothpaste or paper products that you know you'll need again. Prime, meanwhile, can be useful when you want the broader membership benefits, including eligible Prime delivery and entertainment perks.

And yes, you can think about the two separately when deciding what actually makes sense for your shopping habits.

Is Amazon Prime Worth It?

There isn't one answer for everyone.

If you order from Amazon frequently, use some of the entertainment benefits and regularly purchase items that qualify for Prime delivery, the membership may provide more value than it would for someone who shops only occasionally.

The easiest way to figure it out is to look at your actual Amazon habits.

Ask yourself:

  • How often do I order from Amazon?
  • How much do I spend on shipping when I don't have Prime?
  • Do I use Prime Video or other included benefits?
  • Do I shop during Prime-exclusive events?
  • Am I buying things I genuinely need, or am I spending more simply because I have Prime?

That last question matters.

The goal isn't to buy more just because you have Prime. The goal is to get more value from purchases you're already making.

One Simple Way to Think About It

I like to look at Amazon Prime as a convenience membership rather than simply a “free shipping” membership.

If you regularly use the benefits, it can become part of your everyday shopping routine. If you barely use Amazon, however, the annual or monthly membership cost is something worth reconsidering.

Before signing up, check the current membership terms, pricing, trial eligibility and benefits shown on Amazon Canada, since offers and eligibility can change.

Ready to Explore Prime?

Shop when you need to. Use the benefits you actually value. And don't let a membership turn into an excuse to spend more.
